Prerequisites
Introduction to HTML H101 or basic knowledge of HTML.
Requirements
  • Software: Software: Before beginning this class, students will need to have installed a working version of Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS2, CS or 7.0. NOTE: Lectures are written for Photoshop CS3 through 7.0 only. Students using versions lower than Photoshop 6.0 are not qualified to receive the certificate of course completion. Demo versions of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Photoshop LE are not acceptable due to time limits, save restrictions and limits in software features.
  • System Requirements: An adequate computer that can handle the memory demands of Photoshop is vital in order to work efficiently. Please refer to the official Adobe site to ensure your system is able to handle the system requirements for your version of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Programming: Students must be familiar with basic file management, how to run and navigate a computer, basic HTML, and uploading and downloading files via their web space control panel or an FTP program. Assignments will be posted via a web site generated by the student with graphic and text links to the native PSD Photoshop file. If you are not familiar with HTML, it is advised that you take the H101 Introduction to HTML 4.0 or use an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver.
  • Student Commitment: This intense course will cover a lot of material and requires a serious commitment of time and energy from both students and the instructor. Students will need enough time in the week to absorb the following within the given deadlines: Experiment with new techniques, complete weekly assignments, read weekly lectures and book material, answer review questions, ask questions, and study/critique other student's work. It is not advised that students plan a vacation, other intense courses, or heavy workloads during this course.
  • Importing Images/Artwork: Students will need to have a way to import images, artwork or clipart into Photoshop. Acceptable ways to import work include scanners, digital cameras, digital video, clipart/image collections or the use of a service bureau.
  • Web Space (Server): Students must have a web space where they can upload their personal site and assignments. Ideally you should avoid web spaces that support banner ads or pop-up adds as this adds code to your pages. If you do not have a web space, try your ISP first as many provide a small amount of space with your monthly fee. If yours does not, there are a number of free services that are available on the net. A good place to look for free web space is www.freewebspace.net or www.brinkster.com. NOTE: It is imperative that students make sure their free or paid web spaces allow the transmission (upload and download) of native Photoshop PSD files, as some do not! The web space must be configured (MIME-Type) to handle PSD files. Please contact your site host so that you have these details worked out prior to signing up for and starting the class.
  • Required Text: This course uses the Bible series from Wiley. Please purchase the Bible textbook that corresponds to your version and level of experience with Photoshop. NOTE: The Professional Edition of the Photoshop Bible versions CS2 - 7.0 includes ImageReady, but is 40% shorter than the regular edition and is considered a more advanced book. The regular edition of the Bible does not include ImageReady, but is more detailed and includes more of the basics. Students may choose to use either book. If you are unsure about which book to purchase, please contact the instructor for further guidance.

How eClasses Work:Instructors post lectures (text-based, no video or audio), reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants. Students can apply for the completion certificate after finishing the class.

Rating

  • "Another great course by Astrid, she works harder than the students!! A great course for anyone wanting to start Photoshop and those like myself who have been self taught." - Mark Williams

  • "This was a great course. Furthermore, after I finished the course, I referred to the excellent materials frequently until I became more proficient with Photoshop. Great instructor and course!" - Judy Eichstaedt

  • "Astrid Garcia's PS Level 1 is a great course. Since this was my first eClass course I cannot rank perfection across the board; however, I would recommend to anyone who is interested in using Photoshop to enroll in this class. Great overall job imo." - Michael Duckworth

  • "This was a crash course on Photoshop. I came in knowing nothing and came out feeling very comfortable with my newly learned photoshop skills. Thank you!" - Vicki Siwak

  • "Astrid is a knowledgeable and encouraging instructor. Her lectures are what brings the text and the screen together cohesively.
I thoroughly enjoyed Photoshop I, and am planning on taking Photoshop II later this month. It's depth is amazing. I find myself thinking about which filter to use in the middle of something totally unrelated, like my job!
Most challenging and the most fun of any course so far!" - Laura Ashton

  • "Astrid presents the material in a straightforward and concise manner. She presents great examples to illustrate the concepts presented.

Her style of critique coupled with encouragement is fantastic. I would take another course offered by her in a heartbeat. She has opened a new door for me in my creative pursuits...yet another path to explore." - Lori Corbett

  • "Astrid is very knowledgeable. The class materials that she presented to us - in addition to the text - were an excellent combination. I had absolutely no experience modifying photos or working in any program like Photoshop so my learning curve was tremendous. Astrid created an online classroom that supported me in this process. Thank you so much." - Sally Young

  • "This course is excellent start for anyone wishing to learn Photoshop basics." - Beverley Deibler

  • "I really enjoyed this course. I discovered a new way of expressing myself. It is challenging and make you think laterally. The instructor was very encouraging and answering questions effectively and quickly. But most of all, it was great fun!" - Bernadette Vincent

  • "Another class with Astrid, another great learning experience. The classroom was very well structured, the lectures were top-notch, the assignments reinforce what you've learned each week and the instructor is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Photoshop is the industry standard in image manipulation. Every web designer is expected to master this program. Learning through trial and error is NOT enough to master a program and work efficiently with it - something you'll realise early on in the class.
Example: keyboard shortcuts. Learning them and using them religiously (something the instructor stresses time and again) makes them second nature, and you'll soon be working much faster and more effectively than ever before.

Through the class you'll get a solid grounding and command of the software - you'll learn all the important basics the right way, right from the start.

Level 1 takes you from the level of an absolute beginner to an intermediate user who knows what he's doing.

And since Photoshop mastery is (or should be) on the shortlist of skills of every web design student, it should be on yours too!

All I can say is, I'm looking forward to the Level 2 class!" - Charalabos Spiropoulos
