Blogging Basics with Movable TypeWeb logs -- blogs for short -- have taken the online world by storm. What are they, and how can you use them? This course will explain the concepts behind blogging, examine the various uses for blogs in politics, business, and personal growth, and let you set up your own blog. The course is taught using MovableType's popular software by blogger and Web expert Kynn Bartlett. Outline Week 1- What's a Blog? This week will examine the concept of blogging, its origins, and the current state of the art. The question, What's a blog? will be answered by each student as you define the concept and name for your blog, and start blogging. You'll also get access to the group blog and complete assignments to explore the diversity of the blogosphere. Week 2 - Configure Your Blog The configuration options of MovableType will be explored in detail, and you'll be able to customize the appearance and function of your blog. You'll also learn which software programs allow you to compose and post to your blog without using the Web interface. Week 3 - Write Your Blog This week explores the nitty-gritty of writing content for the a blog. What voice will you use? What do terms like 'fisking' and 'permalink' mean? What is the etiquette of blogging? We'll also look at how you can make sure your blog is accessible to all audiences, examine good HTML coding practices, and add graphics to your posts. Week 4 - Promote Your Blog If you write it, they will come. Or will they? This week wraps up the launch of your new blog by explaining how to get links from other bloggers, how to syndicate your blog using RSS, and how to measure the popularity of your new blog. You've got a blog now -- how will you use it? Prerequisites Students should know the basics of HTML -- for example, from the Introduction to HTML (H101). This includes knowledge of the structure of HTML, the concepts of attributes, tags, and entities, and comfortable familiarity with editing HTML source. Requirements Beyond Web access, no specific software is required. The course will use the MovableType software, and during Week One, students will be granted access to the instructor's Internet MovableType server. At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to archive their blogs and transfer them to TypePad or another MovableType installation of their choice.

How eClasses Work:The classroom environment is based on Lundeen & Associates Web Crossing technology, a threaded messaging system. Instructors post lectures, reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants. Kynn Bartlett has been teaching online classes through the HTML Writers Guild and IWA-HWG since 1998. A Web author for nearly 10 years, he founded Idyll Mountain Internet in 1995 and served on the Board of the HTML Writers Guild from 1996 to 2001.
