Introduction to Java Server Pages

This course will provide students with an introduction to developing Web and e-commerce sites using Java Server Pages. JavaServer Pages (JSP) offers an easy and secure way to create dynamic Web pages that are both platform-independent and server-independent. JSP separates content generation from presentation and takes advantage of reusable tags and objects, simplifying the maintenance of your Web applications. JSP provides a development framework that supports a set of built-in objects that can be used to create and manage user sessions and transactions. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by developing a set of mini Web sites using JSP.
Outline
Week 1: JSP Foundations
Learn the features of the client server architectures, HTTP protocol, client side internet development techniques, fundamental server-side Internet development technologies, review object oriented programming principles, setup server environment.
Week 2: JSP Container, JSP Elements
Understand the JSP container, Learn basic comment syntax and basic JSP directives.
Week 3: JSP Elements
Learn the scripting elements, understand how the JSP container interprets the scripting elements, explore the limits of the scripting elements.
Week 4: Implicit Objects
Request and Response variables. Get familiar with implicit JSP Objects, understand the Java Classes that the implicit objects represent and understand how to use implicit objects in JSP
Week 5: JSP Actions
Standard and Common
Week 6: JSP Tag Libraries
TagLibs, Servlets, and Development Components
Prerequisites
Basic understanding of CGI or other dynamic web interaction mechanisms.
Requirements
  • Ability to install and use Sun Microsystems Java 2 SDK Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.3 or later.
  • Web hosting account; If haven't one, try free account service by MyCGIServer at http://www.mycgiserver.com to post homework assignments.
  • Tools setup and usage will be discussed further in class.

How eClasses Work:The classroom environment is based on Lundeen & Associates Web Crossing technology, a threaded messaging system. Instructors post lectures, reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants. Karen McAdamsKaren McAdams has been developing dynamic websites since 1994 when she first discovered the web after exhausting her interest in Gopher, FTP, telnet and NNTP. She has attained certification in Web and IP systems Engineering and is presently training for certification as a Web Component Developer for J2EE and Red Hat Linux System Administration. Karen specializes in using standards-based open source technologies such as Apache, Linux, J2EE, RDBMS, DBI and PERL to develop robust database driven websites.
