Prerequisites Introduction to HTML H101 or basic knowledge of HTML. Requirements - Software: Before beginning this class, students will need to have installed a working version of Adobe Photoshop CS, 6.0 or 7.0. NOTE: Students using versions lower than Photoshop 6.0 are not qualified to receive certificates of course completion, nor will be eligible to receive Web Study Certification. Please also note that currently, all lectures are written for Photoshop versions 6.0 and 7.0 only.
Demo versions of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Photoshop LE are not acceptable due to time limits, save restrictions and limits in software features. Students interested in using Photoshop for web design should have the latest versions of the most popular browsers installed as well.
Knowledge of HTML coding along with an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, Notepad, BBEdit, Arachnophobia, HomeSite or similar program will be needed to create a personal site where all assignments, review questions and class notes can be uploaded to, and accessed by, your instructor and other students. If you are not familiar with HTML, it is advised that you take the H101 Introduction to HTML 4.0 class or that you use a WYSIWYG program such as Dreamweaver.
- System Requirements: An adequate computer that can handle the memory demands of Photoshop is vital in order to work efficiently. The system requirements for Photoshop 7.0 are as follows:
Windows Platform: Intel Pentium III or 4 processor Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT with Service Pack 6a, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2, or Windows XP 128 MB of RAM (192 MB recommended) 280 MB of available hard-disk space CD Rom Drive 800x600 color monitor with 16-bit color or greater video card Macintosh Platform: PowerPC processor (G3, G4, or G4 dual) Mac OS software version 9.1, 9.2, or Mac OS X version 10.1.3 128 MB of RAM (192 MB recommended) 320 MB of available hard-disk space 800x600 color monitor with 16-bit color or greater video card CD Rom Drive Mac OS X support - Programming: Students must be familiar with basic file management, how to run and navigate a computer, basic HTML, and uploading and downloading files via their webspace control panel or an FTP program. Assignments will be posted via a web site generated by the student with graphic and text links to the native PSD Photoshop file. If you are not familiar with HTML, it is advised that you take the H101 Introduction to HTML 4.0 class or that you use a WYSIWYG program such as Dreamweaver.
- Student Commitment: This course will cover a lot of material and it does require a serious commitment of time and energy both from students and the instructor. Students should have enough time in the week to absorb the following within the given deadlines: Experiment with new techniques, complete weekly assignments, read weekly lectures and book material, answer review questions, ask questions, and study/critique other student's work. It is not advised that students plan a vacation or heavy workloads during this course.
- Importing Images/Artwork: Students will need to have a way to import images, artwork or clipart into Photoshop. Acceptable ways to import work include scanners, digital cameras, digital video,
clipart/image collections or the use of a service bureau.
- Web Space (Server): Students must have a webspace where they can upload their personal site and assignments. Ideally you should avoid webspaces that support banner ads or pop-up adds as this adds code to your pages. If you do not have a webspace, try your ISP first as many provide a small amount of space with your monthly fee. If yours does not, there are a number of free services that are available on the net. A good place to look for free webspace is www.freewebspace.net or www.brinkster.com. NOTE: It is imperative that students make sure their free or paid webspaces allow the transmission (upload and download) of native Photoshop PSD files, as some do not! The webspace must be configured (MIME-Type) to handle PSD files. Please contact your site host so that you have these details worked out prior to signing up for and starting the class.
- Book: Please note that there is a Professional Edition of the Photoshop Bible available for version 7.0 only (ISBN 076451993X). This version includes ImageReady, but is 40% shorter than the book listed below. The required text for the course does not include ImageReady but is more thorough than the Pro Edition. Students may choose to use either book, but please keep in mind that the required reading comes from the books listed below.

Instructors post lectures, reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants. Students can apply for the completion certificate after finishing the class. Web Study certificate is also available. Click on the Certificates link on the top navigation bar for more information.
