Introduction to XHTML

In 2002, XHTML has replaced HTML 4.0 as the official W3C standard for coding Web pages. XHTML is the bridge between HTML and XML(the future of web coding). If you are interested in learning how to hand-code Web pages that will transition into XML, while still remaining compatible with current Web browsers, this class is for you! Students with Little-to-No working knowledge of creating HTML pages by hand will be introduced to the concepts, foundations, syntax and structure of XHTML. The course will include an introduction to Cascading Style Sheets. All pages created in the class will be validated using the W3C validation service.

Prerequisites
Students should be comfortable with the DOS or Unix-like file system and creating and saving files. An HTML editor like Homesite or BBedit will aid students in creating their XHTML documents, but is not required. At minimum, the student will need a text editor like Notepad (Windows) or SimpleText (Macintosh). This class concentrates on hand-coding XHTML documents so no WYSIWYG (FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc.) programs will be allowed. For maximum benefit, students should have both IE 5.x or 6 and Netscape 6.x installed on their machines, but again this is not absolutely necessary - just highly recommended.
Requirements
Students must have webspace where they can post their assignments. Ideally you should avoid webspaces that support banner ads or popup adds as this adds code to your pages. If you do not have webspace, try your ISP first as many provide a small amount of space with your monthly fee. If yours does not, there are a number of free services that are available on the net. A good place to look for free webspace is FreeWebSpace.net at http://www.freewebspace.net or the Free Site at http://www.thefreesite.com .

Instructors post lectures, reading selections, and hands-on assignments once a week in the online classroom. Students can discuss the assignments with the instructor and amongst themselves in the classroom area. This format has no set meeting time, which allows students to attend class at a time most convenient to them, yet still provides logically organized communication between class participants. Students can apply for the completion certificate after finishing the class. Web Study certificate is also available.
